Tomorrow: Sew an Easy Summer Jacket at MAC Birmingham

Looking forward to returning to my MAC Birmingham tomorrow for my sew an easy summer jacket workshop with a 'fresh off the sewing machine' Butterick patterns jacket in floral viscose.

See everyone tomorrow!

Maker Monday - Summer Jacket Sample

Really looking forward to my sew an Easy Summer Jacket Workshop this weekend at MAC Birmingham. Finishing off the Butterick pattern sample in black and (uncharacteristic for me) bright floral fabric.

Still a few places left but you can book your spot here: Sew an Easy Summer Jacket (ASC878) | Midlands Arts Centre (macbirmingham.co.uk)

The Little Dictionary of Fashion: Q is for...

...Quality and Quilting in The Little Dictionary of Fashion by Christian Dior.

He suggests that quality is essential to elegance, and you should always strive for the best quality material and fabric (very true!), and quilting can make a nice lining for a winter coat but never as a trimming...it looks cheap apparently.

Fashion advice... circa 1954.

Throwback: Florence - The Retail Windows

Another element that i found interesting on last years trip to Florence was the shop windows.

There is always a very sophisticated vibe in the way they are presented and have a bold-ness about them that doesnt seem to be replicated anywhere else.

Here are a small selection of some of the ones i saw...

Maker Monday: Print Repeats with 1st Year BCU Fashion

Understanding the structures of print placement and repeats can be tricky, so it was great to practice with the first year BCU fashion students with simple shapes and drawings to test repeat theory.

Even with stickers, its a easy way to understand half drop, brick and spot repeat knowledge that can then be developed into something more creative later. We also experimented with hand drawn seamless repeats to understand how drawings can be divided and turned into all over designs.

Although simple in process, it can be very effective.

Maker Monday: Easter Monday Mini-Make Bunny

Its Easter Monday and the Easter Bunny has already been 😀

But to keep the Easter magic all year round, why not make my Mini-Make Rabbit, available on my Learn to Sew page.

Step by step instructions are available in my sewing e-book and a great way to practice hand-stitching and making.

Throwback: Florence - The Duomo

I was very lucky last year to be able to visit Florence in Italy.

This trip was originally planned for a couple of years ago, but due to covid was rescheduled to last summer.

I've been meaning to shared some of the wonderful sights and sounds of this trip for a while but have found it hard to whittle it down to just a few. So instead, i will be sharing a number of throwbacks over the coming weeks to highlight some of the amazing things that i saw.

First up...the Duomo, or Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore as it was known was finished in 1436 and created by architects Cambio, Fabris and most famously Brunelleschi, whose name is linked to the world famous dome.

The structure is stunning to behold and the dome's size is difficult to demonstrate in pictures or videos. What did surprise me is that the dome's outer facade appears white and red in some pictures but is actually white and green tile.

I highly recommend visiting if you are in Florence!
