Maker Monday: Textile Manipulation

A Maker Monday special showcasing the textile manipulation samples from the BCU first year fashion students.

A nice little bit of hand-sewing for positive Monday motivation vibes.

Interiors at Mowgli Leicester

A little throwback to the warming interior of Mowgli in Leicester.

Lots of lovely tonal colours and twinkling lights. A nice vibe on this rainy evening.

Appreciation Post: I love receiving feedback from workshops!

Huge appreciation post to @wearereloved who created this fabulous Tiktok of the jacket she started on my sew an easy jacket course at MAC Birmingham.

It looks amazing! It's lovely to see the finished products being worn.

Repost:
Come with me to a ‘sew and easy jacket course’. I very much lack confidence in my garment making skills so I wanted to make a vintage style plaid blazer for myself. Here is the result . I’m currently wearing it to work!!
What do you think??
If you’re interested in the day course, it’s hosted by the fab @sianrileystudio at the @mac_birmingham

Phyllida Barlow at Tate Modern

On a recent visit to Tate Modern, i came across these lovely pieces by Phyllida Barlow.

They remind me of the mark making, fabric and stitch samples we do with students. Its a great use of mixed media - very expressive and full of colour.

2023 Workshops Begin tomorrow! Are you ready?

This or this?

Two of the styles available on my sold out 'Sew an Easy Jacket' Workshop tomorrow at MAC Birmingham.

Looking forward to meeting everyone and seeing which style you pick.

Fabric Remnants Galore? Here's a way to reuse them....

Fabric remnants can be a difficult thing to navigate for a sustainable sewer.

I found this great hack to use a rotary cutter to slash everything to pieces rather than scissors to cut them up. This makes lots of little pieces to use as toy or cushion stuffing.

This has been a game changer for a recent cushion make and a great way to start working through all my off-cuts rather than throwing them away.

Maker Monday: Me Made Gifts

Those who have followed my making journey for a while will know i love a me-made gift.

Todays post is a special Maker Monday edition to share the gifts i made (now that i have been able to give them out!).

A very close friend recently gave birth to twins and to commemorate the occasion, i made some initial letter pillows for the babies. I did the same for their eldest child and wanted to do something 'similar but different' for them.
Using soft fabric remnants, i collected lots of tonal shades to compliment each other and provide different textures. Nothing new was bought to make the pillows; everything was already in my fabric stash.
A small personalised label for each one was added to the back using permanent fabric marker. I have blocked out their names in the photos.

To make the pillows even more eco and sustainable, the filling was made from left over fabric from my recent makes that was diced up using a rotary cutter.
I saw this hack on Instagram recently and it was a game changer! why i had previously spent ages cutting the fabric remnants with scissors I don't know?! i used a cutting mat and a couple of fabric layers at a time to cut them into strips. The smaller size makes the off cuts easier to use as stuffing for pillows and toys rather the keeping the larger remnants in their original size. They're much softer too!

Alongside these, i didnt want to leave out their eldest child so make a quick miniature tote bag, also from fabric remnants. You may recognise the burgundy fabric as offcuts from a certain Christmas Eve-placemat project! 😉 The inner lining is wipeable and the ribbon and initial decoration pulled together from other things i already had.
Have you made any handmade gifts for friends? 😊
