The MA Fashion Show 2019 - The Pictures

It was a great night on Thursday at the annual MA Fashion Show at Birmingham City University. Students from the Fashion Design, Surface and Textiles Design all presented their work either on the catwalk or in a static exhibition.

The little details of the collections were lovely to look at; particularly loved the needle-felting, creative cut and sculptured elements that appeared in a few pieces.

Take a look at the images below of collections created:

There was also work in the atrium for the static exhibition which has some lovely pieces by the MA Textiles and Surface Design students:

Emma Anderson
Lingling Wei

Chanel Metiers d'Arte Event in London

A wonderful surprise event when visiting London a while back. As events go, its was quite stunning. It was great to speak to members of the Chanel team and understand the construction of garments and the painstaking detail that goes into each and every garment. Inspiration behind the collection and its application into details were explained in detail and a first for me at an exhibition, we were allowed to touch the garments! Other designers take note! This was great for me as an educator, as i can explain about these process to my students so they understand construction better.

I also found it very interesting that they were moving towards more sustainable practices. The 'leather used for their millinery and shoe accessories was made from pineapple fibres. As someone who has a key interest in ecological sustainable practices in fashion, its great to see the larger companies moving towards more eco ways of working.

Saturday Sewing: Toiles and Pattern Cloning

As we head towards the summer, I've noticed I need some more summer tops that actually fit me! (Is it just me or is this wishful thinking when we go shopping?!) So I decided to take a few of my favourite pieces and clone them. I've collected a few lovely fabrics recently and it would be nice to make something nice with them.

I've drafted and sewn up a few different styles of top and testing a commercial pattern that I hope to use for an upcoming MAC class. Fingers crossed they all fit ok!
