'The British Library' Installation by Yinka Shonibare OBE

On a visit to the Tate Modern at the end of last year, i was able to see this wonderful installation 'The British Library' by Yinka Shonibare OBE.

It contains over 6000 books; on the spines of 2,700 of them are names of 1st and 2nd generation immigrants to Britain who have all contributed to British Culture and history. There are other books with names who are opposed to immigration and some unmarked to represent the stories in todays society that haven't been written yet.

The books are bound in Dutch wax print fabric. Developed in the 19th Century, the fabric has a complex history involving colonialism, cultural appropriation and national identity.
