Fashion Revolution Week

This week has been Fashion Revolution Week.

In the week of the 24th April, the anniversary of the Rana Plaza disaster, the organisation Fashion Revolution campaign to raise awareness of exploitation in the fashion industry and encourage consumers to question #whomadeyourclothes. Carry Somers and Orsola de Castro set up this initiative which has grown globally to include events, seminars and promotes the importance of the annual fashion transparency index. This report ranks the top 200 fashion brands and how much information they share about their suppliers, supply chain policies, practices and social and environmental impact.

The Rana Plaza building collapsed on the 24th April 2013, killing 1,138 people and injuring many others. Just days before, the building had been evacuated due to cracks in the walls but workers were allowed or told to return. The building housed a number of garment factories that manufactured a variety of high street labels, and due to the high demand for fast fashion garments, led to poor working conditions and the exploitation of workers who worked to keep up with this demand.

Over this week, I've been sharing some of my eco projects and advice on how you can be more sustainable with your own clothing.

In honour of @fash_rev week, it's time to question #whomadeyourclothes  . The consumption and disposal of #clothing  has risen to alarmingly high levels and it's important to think about how they can be reduced . I hate to throw #clothes  away, so I try to #reducereuserecycle  as much as I can by #sewing  my own #coats  and #upcycling  pieces to #repurpose  them . I'll be sharing some of my #eco  #projects  over the next few days to share #ideas  about how we can #makeachange  . #fashionrevolution  #fashionrevolutionweek  #ecofashion  #sustainability  #lovedclotheslast  #memade  #makeityourself  #recycled

For @fash_rev week, think about how you can #makeachange  by #making  your own #clothes  . Using #commercialpatterns  are a great way of doing this if you don’t want to #custom  #pattern  cut from scratch . I’m running a #course  at @mac_birmingham #teaching  how to use and #sew  a commercial #skirt  pattern soon . Come along and I can help you start on your #memade  wardrobe so you know for sure #whomadeyourclothes  . #fashionrevolution  #fashion  #eco  #sustainability  #ecofashion  #lovedclotheslast  #makeityourself  #sewing  #sustainablefashion  #fashionrevolutionweek

@fash_rev week: let's talk #zerowaste  . I #experimented  with different zero-waste ideas to achieve #customfit  with #preloved  #clothes  whilst at #university  . One combines 6 discarded pieces into 1 to #repurpose  #garments  thrown away and 2 and 3 is #menswear  turned to #womenswear  without removing any excess #fabric  . Even small #remnants  of fabric discarded in the #manufacturingprocess  can cause damage to the #environment  - consider how to reduce the impact when you're #making  by #reusing  #offcuts  at #biasbinding  or #decoration  . Not only are you helping #planetearth  but if you #makeityourself  you'll know #whomadeyourclothes  . #fashionrevolution  #fashion  #lovedclotheslast  #memade  #eco  #sustainablefashion  #ecofashion  #sewing

@fash_rev week: continuing with the #eco  themes, have you considered #upcycling  ? I’m sure we’ve all been there...#purchased  a piece of #clothing  - not worn it and then either #donated  it or shock horror!! thrown it away where it takes years to decompose in #landfill  . Consider #repurposing  the #garment  as something else that you would actually wear . To quote the #wisewords  of Orsola de Castro (swipe to see), ‘the most #sustainable  garment is the one already in your #wardrobe  ‘ - through upcycling, you can help to #reduce  #consumption  levels, help the #environment  and give new life to a #preloved  item . #fashionrevolutionweek  #sustainablefashion  #sewing  #lovedclotheslast  #whomadeyourclothes  #fashionrevolution  #ecofashion  #reducereuserecycle  #makeachange  #memade  #makeityourself  #refashioners

@fash_rev week: is it possible to have #fun  with #ecofashion  ? Yes is the answer! I’ve #recycled  used #patternpaper  into #paper  #clothing  to give it another purpose before it’s recycled . Not the most conventional of #sustainable  projects but a lovely #creative  way to #reusereducerecycle  . @anntonia.r - major throwback moment I know! . #sewing  #sustainablefashion  #eco  #making  #fashionrevolutionweek  #fashionrevolution

As @fash_rev week comes to a close, it’s important to ask ‘what can I do to #makeachange  ?’ . Try #sewing  your own #clothes  instead of buying, #recycling  #fabric  #remnants  as #biasbinding  , using #reclaimed  or #recycled  fabric or #upcycling  old #clothing  . Small changes to the way we #buy  and #dispose  can help us be more mindful of what we consume and be more #sustainable  . #making  #fashionrevolutionweek  #sustainablefashion  #eco  #fashion  #ecofashion  #memade
