Sewing Saturday: More Binding

Another work in progress for the Me Made wardrobe.

More recycled bias binding and a handmade button loop being used for this make. Looking forward to sharing more with you soon!

British Museum: The Museum of the World Virtual Tour

One of the fun things about my job is getting to join in sometimes...

The British Museum has created a virtual tour of some of their archives. As part of one of our creative sessions, my colleague Lucinda incorporated a research exercise into the day; to look at, draw and respond to some of the things we were seeing.

This was always my most enjoyable part of developing a project when i was a student; drawing and responding to primary sources to create your own ideas is a great starting point for any collection.

I chose an Assyrian sculpture that was excavated somewhere between 1845-1851, and a piece from Japan by Kitagawa Utamaro - 'A Parody of Narihira's Journey to the East'

In a sketchbook, i used a mixture of different pencil densities, watercolour pencils, biro and felt pens to quickly respond to sections of the artifacts to create interesting lines and shapes.

Maker Monday: Pleat Hacks

What can you do with a fork and some fabrics...create pleats!

A great hack for folding a pleat is to turn the fabric using the prongs of the fork. This helps to give the pleat a crisp edge and make them an equal size.

This section i'm pleating below is going to be added to a me-made make very soon!

The Next Pattern Cloning Project is...

My next pattern cloning project is a copy of my favourite FCUK jumper that i've had for years.

I don't work in jersey often so need to do a working toile for this one. I've found some grey viscose grey rib knit from Pound Fabrics to test and wear.

We shall see how it turns out.

Maker Monday: Me-Made Vest Top

Another me-made make is finished!

Using another of my Un Peu de Ci, Un Peu de Ca fabrics, i decided to alter the block pattern shape to have a bottom panel with central knife pleats. I only had a certain amount of fabric available so had to get a bit creative with the seaming.

A complication i hadn't expected was that the fabric was warped a little; making it very difficult to remain on the straight grain and pattern match at the same time. In a number of areas, one has had to give way to the other, but the additional of a navy bias strip helps to distract the eye so it less noticeable :)

Sewing Sunday: Another Make!

The next project begins!

I'm starting another me-made make with the second of my wonderful Un Peu de Ci, Un Peu de Ca fabrics, complete with me made binding.

The New Look Pattern continues...

I'm still persevering with this New Look Patterns top.

The 2nd toile was much better but additional amendments are needed. The darts need lengthening and the side shaping needed reducing.

Hopefully this should do it. Fingers crossed!

Thread, Thread and more Thread!

What should have been for Maker Monday but wasn't...the organisation of my threads.

Not exactly in rainbow colours but they are grouped relatively according to colour :D

Sewing Sunday: Overlockers

You know a Sewing Sunday isn't going well isn't going well when the overlocker looks like this!

The battle continues!

Maker Monday: Pattern Cloned Vest Top

I've finally finished my pattern cloned vest in one of my Un Peu de Ci, Un Peu de Ca fabrics.

A few minor problems during final construction, that despite a toile, needed some ad-hoc changes, but its nice and light, and easy to wear.

Another project of the to do list - on to the next one!
